HC handle leaks causing multiple problems
I have noticed that HC 7 build 16 has a problem with handle leaks. This may be present in other versions as well.
This manifests itself by various symptoms.
To see if handle leaks are going on do the following:
Open Windows Task Manager
Click on View; Select Columns
Select "Handle Count" then OK
Scroll to the right in WTM and click on the handles column to get the highest usage to the top.
When I have seen problems one or more HC processes have well over 100,000 handles open. In comparison, the System process typically only needs 4000 on my servers.
Typical problems you see:
* IIS stops serving asp.net and asp pages.
* Mail server becomes flaky.
* Unable to add users either through HC or Windows.
* You might see entries like this in your System Log:
"An I/O operation initiated by the Registry failed unrecoverably. The Registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the Registry"
Which is VERY SCARY!
I wonder if part of the problem is due to crashes like this one:
"The Hosting Controller Scheduler Service service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s)."
HC you need to resolve these problem.
1. Fix the crashes.
2. Fix your memory leaks.
Workaround, reboot your servers weekly, something I have not had to do since Windows NT 4 and that was only monthly.
