Temporary IP Address VS Virtual Directory

We have some customers that are complaining about using virtual directories for their sites when moving and testing.
They are asking about being assigned temporary ips address for their sites to be used while developing, testing, and awaiting DNS updates.
Is there a way to do this through the control panel? We are using HC 8.
If not can someone suggest the easiest way to get this 'feature' for our clients?

Thanks for any and all assistance!!!

    hi

we are not actually running HC in production because... well :) a lot of things.

BUT what I would do is this. Have a domain ready for demo/temp usage and then go to the website and add a host header to the website. Maybe the domain is "demodomain.com" and then your customers site is "smartshop.com", you could then add a hostheader "smartshop.demodomain.com" to the site and in your DNS for demodomain.com add this ofcause (maybe as a * record if you only have ONE server to default to). This will create a nice temp domain for testing.

BUT you can also just add a parked domain "smartshop.demodomain.com" and it will create the correct zonefile in DNS and everything for you.

In both cases I think the current problem is that deleting them again will not work and for the "parked domain" thing it seams that its actually only creating "www.smarshop.demodomain.com" - a bit to long for my tast.

anyway, hopefully HC will fix this two errors also some day.

ofcause asking the customer to overwrite DNS using the HOSTS file in windows is also possible :D

    Thanks for the advise.
We are doing something similar using sub-domains, and it seems to be keeping the clients happy.
Out of curiosity, what are those reasons you no longer use HC?
Maybe you could PM me so it would be offline and not derail the forum.

    Thanks for help!

its no secret :) I have already posted most of the errors we found and the feature problems that are keeping us from starting moving or customers to HC.

We are running HELM at the moment for windows only - even if we are still running HELM3 it out performs most hostingpanels we have found and testet but it has two problems - its parallels now and parallel does not care about customers it seams but mostly we are looking for a controlpanel like HC that has a good price and is running multiserver AND linux windows in a mix.

So we are absolutly still interested in HC ! and still testing or mostly waiting for bugfixes and "feature fixes".

at the moment there are some bugs that keep us from using it and at least one BIG feature bug that is supposed to be fixed in build 6 - the problem related to .htaccess files for linux servers that make it impossible for customers to run CMS "the correct way" :)

HC has a lot more limitations than we first though from the look of it and from talking to sales and tech people at HC. But we can rethink our products and they "way we do things". Everybody gets used to doing things one way based on the possibilitis of the current setup they have. HELM is very, very flexible and ... WE are going to miss it a lot :)

but the gain for us of running windows and linux under one hat is big.

we are disapointed that our resellers cannot sell linux and windows hosting to the same client but has to create two clients.

dedicated www but shared mail is not working like its supposed to so this is a big loss for us, but not critical and maybe it will get better.

we where hoping to run linux mailserver without having to by merak or something - simply to save some money for lowend offerings we wanted to have. But its does not work very well so we are dropping this.

    and things like this...

but mostly we are waiting for build 6 that should fix the biggest problems for us to start using it in production. The rest we will be happy to work out in time (I hope :D)

oh and not having DNS only hosting is also a big loss for us and mailhosting is not doing diskusage collection but we are told this is something they will fix also :)

we will see, but for now I just hope build 6 will at least allow us to start using HC for our minimal linux needs and the rest will follow :)
