Open DNS servers

Hi, as you can see I am cleaning up my DNS so my mail clients have better performance when mailing to aol, yahoo, hotmail and the like. I am trying to get rid of all errors on the report generated by dnsreport.com.

My server shows "Open DNS servers"

Can I turn recursion off as the link states? I am using MS DNS on a win2003 server and host many domains. DNS Fix

I ran the hostingcontroller.com domain name and see your DNS servers are open too. Hostingcontroller.com report

Thanks!

Thank you very much for letting us know. Once we tried to disable it and we got problems in receiving mails. Whenever you disable recursive dns your normal browsing and nslookup may stop on local system I think if this is your key server it should be opened.

Your sites don¬t have problems but the mail server don¬t work.
Why mailserver don¬t work if DNS recursion if close?
Because, neither nslookup work ...

At this moment this feature don¬t has a light on the way...

I¬m using SimpleDNSPlus and I have the recursive disabled.
Actually,. if you go to DNS Stuff, they have a short description on how to disable it properly and still have it running correctly.

Thanks all.

SupermanInNY, Did you completely disable recursion or allow for certain IP¬s with simpleDNSPlus?

I may switch to simpleDNSPLus if this works properly.

I don¬t know if this is the correct way to do it, but that is how it is setup on my server with a ¬clean¬ dns stuff bill of health.
Mind you that I don¬t know why am I showing that I have ZERO as the last IP in my class as this is not an IP used on my server. (however, I do have the entire half class).

SupermanInNY,
So you have your server set up this way. Does it show as closed dns on dnsreport.com? That is what I am shooting for. Also, you don¬t have any problems with websites or mail resolving to your server? That would be great!

I finally disabled recursion on this server and all appears to work fine. I'll keep you posted. I am using ms dsn on the server and it has the mail server on the same box as well.

Dnsreport is a guide

I really aint that bothered about recursion! If you disable it and your mail server uses it for dns lookups mail will stop working

Chris,

I am not a dns guy, that is why I am here. I am using mailenable pro/ent version and my mail seems to work fine. I have set up multiple test email accounts depending on shared ip or static ip and can send and receive to/from other servers and hotmail just fine.

It has been around 30 hours and so far so good. Am I missing something here?

Marty

Thanks,

Marty

The company I lease my server from has DNS servers I use in Mailenable in the General Tab in the SMTP settings. This seems to handle the problem.

I'll keep you posted.
